The Summer of 2020

Are there such things as silver linings? Amongst the worry, lockdown gave me wonderful peace and quiet, warm sunshine and the very, very rare privilege of time to create. Working for many years developing MINISTRY OF FOOD, I have always found my kitchen garden to be a source for both my culinary and artistic creativity. This summer, my Kitchen Garden has never looked better, growing all my recent ‘subjects’ from seed has been a uniquely satisfying experience. From nurturing the tiny seedlings, to watching them flourish into plants and drawing them at various stages - before they end up on the dinner table has given me a new sense of continuity between my culinary & creative work.

Each freshly harvested vegetable is illustrated in exquisite detail using lightfast coloured pencil. Most are labelled with the variety, date seeds were sown, date harvested and drawn, thus giving a true provenance to each signed, limited edition giclee print.

Prints are available on my Etsy site or on the Contact Form below. Limited commissions are undertaken.

colour pencils

Over many years I have tried my hand at various art techniques - and never quite found any medium that I truly enjoyed.

Persevering, I discovered ‘Lightfast Colour Pencil’ -  almost immediately I was totally hooked, they are un-like any other medium I have ever tried and fit in perfectly with my hectic lifestyle - you never return to the drawing board to find dried up paint and rock hard brushes !

ART CAREER

In 1996 I was commissioned by Conran Octopus to design and write The New Stencil Book (all the rage in the nineties !) and nearly 20 years later I started drawing vegetables with the intention of illustrating and producing a ‘Ministry of Food Recipe Book’.

Shortly into the project, I realised that drawing the vegetables was far more rewarding than the painstaking research needed for a cookery book (I’m much more of a ‘handful of this and a good dollop of that’ kind of girl) and the book idea fell deeply into ‘Room 101’.

Commissions

I have developed my own contemporary style of botanical art and try to grow particularly ‘photogenic’ vegetables to draw. This summer have been lucky enough to have several private and commercial commissions, with particular success from ‘food to fork’ establishments, as like the foods they serve, the drawings have excellent provenance. I gladly welcome enquires for commissions, please contact me via the form below.

THE kitchen garden

Planning the vegetable garden to provide year long produce for eating and drawing is one of my passions.  Even in the winter months you will find me gathering a trug full of celeriac, horseradish, kale and beetroots even the decaying leaves have a beauty all of their own.

Come rain, sleet, sun (and lockdown) you will find me in the Kitchen Garden with miniature dachshunds Dougall and Lady Daphne, not far behind.
